Ficksburg is known as the “Cherry Capital of the World” and to celebrate this title the small, but beautiful town hosts an annual Cherry Festival. The first Festival took place in 1968, making this the longest running crop Festival in South Africa.
The main events back in 1968 were the street parades, the Cherry Ball and the crowning of the Cherry Queen. Over time the events have changed slightly, but the whole feel of the festival still makes visitors fall in love with the delicious cherries!
The Ficksburg Cherry Festival now attracts approximately 20 000 visitors to this quaint town each year and offers magnificent scenery along with a fun filled festival with something for both young and old. A number of events run alongside each other over the three days from sporting activities and kids’ activities to farm tours, tastings, workshops, an exhibition and market stalls jam packed with goodies galore. This allows visitors more than enough choice that will leave them wanting to come back next year to attend the events they didn’t get to!
In addition to the usual activities visitors can expect to see a few old favourites’ back such as the wine and chocolate pairings, the popular Scottish Pipe band and even the Scarecrow-making workshop. Bring the whole family for a weekend away and enjoy more than just the festival, but a little tranquillity in this very pretty spot of the country.
