De Hoop Nature Reserve, Western Cape
The De Hoop Nature Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the 8 areas that forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom. It is located in the Western Cape province of South Africa, only 3 hours drive from Cape Town in the Overberg district, close to Cape Agulhas. The reserve covers 36 000 hectares, is managed by Cape Nature and lies on the popular Garden Route and Whale Routes. The closest town is Bredasdorp.
The Reserve encompasses 70 km of unspoiled coastline that is home to dolphins, whales and 250 species of fish and includes 19 km of vldi (wetlands), making this reserve a must for tourists who like to keep active and see it all. From the plant loving visitors, to the active quad biking younger generation, this reserve offers activities for every age.
The area is rich in fynbos vegetation that has great significance to scientists who study eco-systems and vegetation sustainability. Some of the species that are an important part of the de Hoop Reserve for the conservation of lowland fynbos are:
- Ericas - heath-like shrubs
- Geophytes - bulbs that store moisture in fleshy underground
- Proteas - tall shrubs with large leaves
- Restios - wiry, reed-like plants which are always present in fynbos
The reserve hosts 86 mammal species including Bontebok which are very rare and the Cape Mountain Zebra, Grey Rhebok and Eland. Smaller animals include Caracal, Baboon and Yellow Mongoose. Leopards are seen in the reserve but very seldom.
The reserve is home to 260 species of birds including the only remaining colony of the very rare Cape Vulture making it a very popular place with bird watching enthusiasts.
