Vergelegen Wine Estate

A World-Class Estate

The Vergelegen (meaning “situated far away”) Wine Estate is internationally acclaimed for its superb wines and the preservation of its beautiful homestead and grounds. This world renowned Somerset West wine estate is known for its history spanning over 300 years and its incredible natural beauty.

Vergelengen’s founder, Adriaan van der Stel, planted the first vineyards and they included varieties such as “blue muscadel”, “steendruif” (chenin blanc), white muscadel and frontignan. The vineyards flourished all through the Theunissen family’s tenure as well as the various plantings from later owners of the Estate. The last of these vines were removed in 1962 and the ground lay fallow until 1987 when the Estate was purchased by Anglo American. The Estate’s wine portfolio includes a Flagship, Premium and Reserve Range which are distributed all over the world to countries such as Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and all over Europe and America.

When the Estate was taken over by Anglo American Farms, the mansion and gardens were extensively refurbished. Today there are 17 unique gardens to explore and wander through, ranging from the only Camellia Garden of Excellence in South Africa, to the splendid Octagonal Garden. Five of the Camphor Trees at the entrance to the manor House have been documented as the oldest living trees on the sub-continent and were declared a national monument in 1942.

It comes as no surprise that Vergelegen is the continued choice of visitors to the Cape Winelands region. Since 1994 the Estate has been visited by the likes of Queen Elizabeth II, Nelson Mandela and Hilary Clinton. Visitors can taste top class hand-made wines in the modern Wine Tasting Centre and enjoy informal or fine dining at one of the Estate Restaurants.
