Carolina is a small town that lies at the crossroads of the R33, R36 and R38 in the Grass and Wetlands region of Mpumalanga, at 1700m above sea level. It is a mixed farming and small-scale coal and precious-stone mining community. The entire region is dotted with an abundance of shimmering lakes and rivers of exceptional natural beauty.
The spectacular Komati Gorge and linked Komati River area allows for day picnicking, swimming, fishing, hiking, boating or just general relaxing and soaking up the warm sun. The Komati area is a bird lovers delight and is home to an abundance of vibrant birds.
Just to the North West of Carolina is the picturesque Nooitgedacht Nature Reserve - a very popular birding area and home to more than 200 species of spectacular birds. There are also a number of exciting horse and hiking trails - most of these lovely trails are day trails, but for the adventure seekers there are several 2-day trails available where one can stay overnight in a trail hut.
Carolina also boasts a fine cultural and historical heritage. Apart from the fascinating architecture, this area also houses a few fine examples of San rock art which can be seen and explored. There are also a few interesting Battlefields which can be visited.

Around the 19th Century there was a rather vital wagon route linking Johannesburg to the wildly popular gold fields of the Kaap Valley and the farmers in the area decided to establish a town as a stopover for the wagon trains. C.J. Coetzee, decided to offer the other farmers a portion of his farm on the proviso that they named the town after his wife. Carolina was appropriately established in 1882. During the 2nd Anglo-Boer War the village was completely destroyed but later rebuilt. There are still a few perfect examples of impressive sandstone architecture in Carolina’s public buildings.
