The little village of Campbell lies in a gorge known to the Griquas as Knovel Vallei, meaning 'valley of wild garlic'. Up this gorge ran the old road to the interior followed by so many of the early explorers, missionaries and traders.
It is worth wandering down Campbell's streets and looking into some of the old buildings.
The surroundings are wild and lonely and signs on the road constantly warn motorists against kudu jumping across the way. Some of these huge antelope have been known to jump through the windshields of motor vehicles.
