- Northern Cape
This area was also known as Thirstland due to the lack of rain, but in 1961 it was hit by a flash flood which cut the settlement in two. In 1962, after it had recovered, a municipality was formed.
The region contains very little vegetation, primarily very low shrubs and yellow grass among a rocky desert kind of landscape. If you travel north from Brandvlei towards Kenhardt you will pass through a huge landscape of nothingness for the next 200km or more.
Temperatures above 40 degrees C are not uncommon.
