The town lies south west of the Oviston Nature Reserve which has more than 48 animal species, and nearly 150 bird species have been identified in the area. The Reserve is traversed by over 50 kms of game viewing roads and has as a guided overnight wilderness trail. Another one of the most appealing attractions of Venterstad is the Gariep Dam. The country's largest dam is a magnet to water sports enthusiasts and there is excellent fishing.
Venterstad is more of a town you stumble upon. This is “big sky country” where the horizon is shared with windmills and the odd cow – no buildings in sight! The town has no bank, only an ATM, a few friendly shops that will cater for all your basic necessities, a doctor visits once a week and last we heard still supports a mobile clinic and a satellite clinic at Oviston. The peace and quiet alone makes for a great reason to spend a few days.
Venterstad is also a good launch-pad for anyone wanting to enjoy the Gariep Route, which covers Gariep village, Bethulie, Springfontein, Smithfield, Jagersfontein, Philippolis and Colesberg. Aliwal North is also just a short distance and offers further activities and attractions.
Venterstad has a local hotel and a small number of self-cater establishments.

Venterstad began life back in the mid-1870s as a farmer’s town, with its farm houses, shops and church buildings. It was quiet until the Gariep Dam was built, and then a lot more farms were established around here now that there was available water.
The town was named after the owner of the land on which it was established, Johannes J. T. 'Venter. It was laid out in 1875 and attained municipal status in 1895.
It is one of the smaller towns that currently forms part of the Gariep Local Municipality, with its seat in Burgersdorp.
