Tzaneen Dam Natuurreservaat, Limpopo
The Tzaneen Dam Nature Reserve is situated in the Limpopo Province, South Africa.
The Tzaneen Dam, which used to be known as the Fanie Botha Dam is about 12 km square and forms part of the Tzaneen Dam Nature Reserve, making the Reserve a popular fishing and birdwatching spot. Lying just 10 km north-west of the town of Tzaneen, the Dam is surrounded by tropical plantations and the area offers warm weather and water temperatures throughout the year. Swimming in shallow water however is not recommended as hippo and crocodile are known residents of the Dam. Take along your binoculars to view the hippos from afar!
Fishing enthusiasts describe the waters as “quiet simply the best place for carp fishing in Africa”. The Dam is well stocked with Florida strain Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Carp and various indigenous fish. Watersports are also a favourite pastime for visitors to the Reserve where both young and old can be kept entertained for hours.
The Reserve is perfect for nature lovers and birdwatchers. Over 350 species of birds have been recorded on and around the water. The area below the dam Wall has an interesting mix of habitats and you can expect to see Red-collard Widowbirds, Yellow Bishops and Yellow Warblers. Below the sluice gates, near the small bridge that crosses of the Letabe River, bird species include the African Pied, Half-collard Kingfisher and the Red-faced cisticola blackSaw-wing.
