Swartruggens is a small farming town, almost halfway between Rustenburg and Zeerust along the N4. The community is made up of approximately 2000 residents with the majority being Afrikaans speaking.
The town is situated in bushveld countryside – it started as a village and grew into a beautiful town which still functions as a village, happy to remain in obscurity and to maintain its anonymity. Swartruggens is known however, for being an ideal stopover for travellers en-route to Botswana.
Swartruggens is probably best known for being a malaria-free zone with easy access to numerous game farms, including the popular Madikwa and Tulane Game Lodges, close to the city of Johannesburg. The area boasts over 400 species of birds and is also home to many wonderful hiking trails.
Swartruggens also lies near the towns of Groot Marico and Koster and although it is predominately cattle farming country, it is also the site of the discovery of diamonds in 1932 and some of the mines still remain open and offer tours to visitors who are interested.
Accommodation options include some Guest houses, B&B’s and self-catering units ideal for a weekend getaway.
