Steytlerville lies in the shadow of the Winterhoek Mountains, approximately 90 km east of Willowmore, in the breath-takingly beautiful Baviaanskloof Wilderness area.
This has to be one of the quaintest little Karoo towns in the country, exceptionally beautiful and worth a visit for this reason alone. The streets are wide, originally built this way so that Ox Wagons could turn around, and is home to many architectural gems, both Victorian and Edwardian homes abound. Due to the small size of Steytlerville these houses are well preserved. Steytlerville is also home to some of the largest Edwardian style Churches.
Another reason tourist’s stop off in the area is due to the richness of bird life and local game. The Baviaanskloof area boasts three biomes, Karoo, fynbos and valley bushveld, which has attracted over 200 species of birds. The area is also home to unique rock formations which were formed millions of years ago and these include the Waaipoort and Draaikrans.
It goes without saying that when visiting a beautifully unspoilt and natural area such as this, outdoor enthusiasts can look expect many activities such as mountain biking, hiking, quad biking and guided nature and birding tours.
Accommodation in and around Steytlerville ranges from Guesthouses and B&B’s to self-catering and camping sites.
