Situated in the heart of Stellenbosch is the Stellenbosh Village Green which was laid out as a parade ground back in 1703. Today the oak lined streets, water canals and beautiful white-washed Cape Dutch style buildings of Stellenbosch surround the village green. The Burgerhuis Museum, a cultural museum, is one of a group of historical buildings circling the green, also known as the Braak.

The Museum is a fully restored 17th Century home. The original house was built in 1797 and is regarded as a typical dwelling of an upper class family from the old Cape. The home was designed with the characteristic Cape Dutch architecture found in many of the buildings in the Western Cape. Antonie Fick, a third generation immigrant, built the original home and furnished it with yellowwood furnishings which was the style of the day for many wealthier Cape citizens.

Today the home, fully restored, still has fine examples of yellowwood furniture and is decorated with fine Chinese porcelain. The kitchen has also been furnished with curious items and beautiful copper utensils that would have been used in the preparation of meals.
