Die Ou Tronk (The Old Jail) in Riversdale, Wes-Kaap
A Most Unique Venue
Die Ou Tronk (The Old Jail) in Riversdale is a most unique venue, it is an all in one stop spot - a coffee shop, craft & curio market, nursery, museum and the local meeting place.
Originally built as a trading post in 1838 by the two Barry’s from Swellendam, the old jailhouse is one of the oldest historically buildings in the town. It was only in 1860 the site was bought by the state and converted into a jailhouse, a police Office Courthouse as well as Wardens accommodation.
Today visitors can wander from cell to cell which is now a series of shops filled with an eclectic mix of curios, gifts, accessories and crafts. Visit the ghoulish gallows, used only once before the jail closed down in 1979, before relaxing under the shade of Avocado and fruit trees in the open courtyard. Choose from a small menu of light meals, cakes, cold drinks, coffees and teas and enjoy the hospitality of the friendly owners.
If there is one very good reason to head off the N2 into Riversdale, Die Ou Tronk, and its carrot cake, would be it!
