The Hugh Exton Photographic Museum is situated in Polokwane in the province of Limpopo, South Africa.

The Museum is housed in an old 1890’s Dutch Reformed Church and has an impressive collection of 23 000 cultural and historical photo collection. This original collection of glass negatives dates from between 1892 to 1945 and portrays what the Polokwane area (previously known as Pietersburg) looked like during this time.

Also on display are some cameras used by Hugh Exton as well as his appointment book with notes on each photo taken. Take a trip back in time with him as he takes you back to the people, the architecture and trade of yesteryear.  He took photographs of everyone and everything, regardless of age, race or religion. During his time, and he lived to be 91 years old, he was responsible for photos of many historical events in the area.

Open Monday to Friday between 09h00 to 15h30

A nominal admission fee is charged and bookings are essential. Please contact the museum directly for pricing.

Climate

Polokwane experiences rainfall mainly in the summer months with the highest occurring in December and January.

Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 18˚C and 26˚C.

Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 4˚C and 21˚C.

Transport

There are daily flights into Polokwane International Airport from O R Tambo Airport in Johannesburg. Car rental facilities are available.

Driving to Polokwane from Johannesburg will take approximately 3 hours along the N1.
