Protea Garage in Nieuwoudtville, Noord-Kaap

Protea Garage, in the small Northern Cape town of Nieuwoudtville, is a surprising and wonderful surprise for all motorcycle enthusiasts.

At last count, Thinus Coetzer’s magnificent collection of motorcycles was at 172 and still climbing! This number does not include the elderly tractors, sports cars and classic cars, both antique and modern versions, at his garage museum.  

Thinus and his wife moved to the Nieuwoudtville about 15 years ago and while the petrol and diesel side of the business sort of ran itself, Thinus’s dream of a living motorcycle museum soon became a reality. He already owned a few interesting cars and bikes, being a lifelong motorcyclist himself, the Protea Garage’s rather large outbuildings gave him the space he needed.

Visiting this museum is a must for motorbike enthusiasts as this collection includes an interesting collection of “Help-My-Traps” with some real rare treats like a Honda Giro, a three-wheeler, and a French-made Motorflash Moped. The biggest collection of brands goes to Honda and no respectable collection would be complete without a 1982 CX Turbo in pristine condition!

If you find yourself in the neighbourhood, make sure to stop in at the Protea Garage – just make a courtesy call ahead if you have the hour to spare and would like to see this amazing private collection.
