Modjadji Natuurreservaat, Limpopo
The Modjadji Nature Reserve is situated in the Limpopo Province, South Africa.
This 530 hectare Nature Reserve can be found 30 km outside of the town of Tzaneen and is also known as the Modjadji Cycad Reserve. It boasts some of the largest and oldest Cycad specimens on the planet. Here visitors can view the largest concentration of single cycad species in the world, with some specimens standing up to 13 metres high bearing cones that weigh up to 34 kg. The Reserve is unspoilt and very much like it was in prehistoric times when the plants were once the main diet of the prehistoric mammals that lived here. The plants seed between December and February which is the best time to visit.
The Reserve is named after the “Rain Queens”, who were revered for their rain making powers. The Modjadji tribe, a matriarchal society that has produced 5 Rain Queens, surrounds the reserve and their culture, architecture and traditions add interest to any guests visit to the area. Tours of the village can be pre-arranged, however, take note that only woman are allowed to enter the village.
Other than the fascinating Cycads the reserve also has 170 species of bird for bird enthusiasts and offers the opportunity to spot game such as the Blue Wildebeest, Waterbuck, Impala, Nyala and Bushbuck while walking on one of the trails through the reserve.
