Koppies is a small town located almost halfway between Kroonstad and Vanderbijlpark on the N1, close to the Renoster River.
This little farming town began as a railway station, but today serves as a little hideaway for city goers looking for a peaceful weekend away from their hectic lifestyles. Koppies is only three hours from Bloemfontein and less than two from Johannesburg! The surrounding area offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor fun from hiking and biking to birding and horse riding!
Koppies is a beautiful small town where fields of sunflowers, grain and mielies are visible during the summer months and where visitors can and experience some wonderful fishing at the Koppies Dam just east of the town.
The surrounding area offers visitors a choice of a few guesthouses, self-catering units and Bed & Breakfasts as well as camping facilities.

Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 14˚C and 26˚C.

The name Koppies is a derivation of the towns original name, Honing Kopjes”, meaning Honey Hills. The name apparently referred to the inundation of bees in the rocky hills near the town whilst they were trying to build the railway line back in 1904.
The town was established in 1904 by Gen Christiaan de Wet on his former farm Rooipoort, on the banks of the Renoster River. He donated the land to those who had survived the Second Boer War (1899 - 1902) fought between the Afrikaners of the two Boer Republics and the British Empire
