The Art of Shopping

The Newtown Junction Mall, opened in 2014, has been a major part of the revival of the historic downtown Johannesburg area. The Mall is situated behind the landmark Museum Africa building and easily accessed from the M1 North via Carr Street and the M1 South via the eastern entrance and exit.

The Mall development was designed with the original architecture of the old Johannesburg produce market and old structures such as the Potato Shed have been restored and reused in the new development today as a “Steam Punk” inspired restaurant. The Potato Shed was originally, just as its name indicates, an actual 1911 potato shed that served as a trader’s market for fresh produce before it was abandoned during the early 20th Century. Careful attention was paid to incorporate the area’s remaining historic buildings into the design and remnants of early 20th Century Johannesburg can still be seen in many of the surrounding heritage structures and in the iron work surrounding the stores on the Mall’s central square.

Newtown Junction is a huge shopping complex that offers a wide range of High Fashion stores such as Mr. Price, Total Sports, Truworths and Edgars as well as supermarkets, a gym, jewellery and gift stores. The open-air square is particularly lively on Sunday afternoons with free jazz concerts or other entertainment.

The food court is always a favourite spot to stop for a quick bite in-between shopping or before or after a movie at the Ster-Kinekor cinema centre. The shopping centre also offers many other popular restaurants, cafés or coffee shops to choose from and there is always some sort of event or exhibition to get involved in!

The Newtown Cultural Precinct has been proclaimed a National Heritage area so when you out next and in need of a bit retail therapy, why not choose Newtown Junction and do a little sight-seeing at the same time!
