Apartheid Museum

Apartheid is exactly where it belongs - in a museum

The Apartheid Museum is situated in the south of Johannesburg on a 7 hectare piece of land, next to the  Gold Reef City Theme Park and the Golf Reef City Casino. It is located walking distance from Southdale Shopping Centre

The museum opened its doors to the public in 2001 and is one of more distinguished museums of our time. It seeks to preserve the history of South Africa of the 20th Century with its main focus on the beginning and the end of Apartheid.

The Apartheid Museum was built by Akani Egoli (Gold Reef City) with land given to them, as part of an agreement they made with the Gambling Board. The building of the museum was part of the agreement when they applied for their licence for Gold Reef City Casino and is registered as a non-profit organisation. The museum pays rent to Gold Reef City, who own the building and therefore needs to be sponsored with donations and contributions to sustain itself.
