Hammanskraal is a small town approximately 30 minutes outside of Pretoria and is home to thousands of workers at the ever-increasing business district of Babelegi.
Hammanskraal is not a particularly pretty town and its neglected conditions are directly linked to it being one of the previously disadvantaged areas. Nevertheless, travelling through there are plenty of roadside stalls offering essential items and home-made delicacies throughout the township. Most visitors to the area pass through the little town to visit the number of game lodges, farms and small holdings in the area that provide opportunities to experience the bushveld minutes from the city.
East of Hammerskraal is the Dinokeng region, Dinokeng meaning “place of rivers”, a beautiful part of the country also full of game reserves and nature reserves.
A different type of attraction for those staying in the area is the Carousel Casino, full of great restaurants, live entertainment and of course a Casino Hall.

The name Hammanskraal literally means “Hammans stockade” and owes its name to a local nineteenth century farmer called Hamman, who built a stockade here to protect his cattle from lions.
For the early period Hammanskraal stayed a small settlement with a few cash stores till the early 1960`s. Thereafter it became a mixed Black cultural area during the Apartheid era. The town was very instrumental in the struggle against this regime, between 1972 and 1983 with Hammanskraal hosting some of the most significant meetings in the history of the struggle against apartheid.
