Bourke's Luck Potholes

Bourke’s Luck Potholes are located on the R532, 35km north of Graskop. The information centre there details some of the interesting natural and socio-historic features and is also the starting point of the 700m walking trail to the potholes.

Cylindrical potholes

This unusual and beautiful scenic natural water feature was caused through countless eons of waterborne sand and rock grinding huge, cylindrical potholes into the bedrock of the river where the Treur River meets with the Blyde river.

Tom Burke

The Potholes were named after a gold digger, Tom Burke, who staked his claim nearby. Although his claim did not produce a single ounce of gold, he correctly predicted that large gold deposits would be found in the area.
