The Birds of Eden Sanctuary is situated in The Crags in the Western Cape, South Africa.

Birds of Eden is one of three sanctuaries in the Plettenberg Bay area managed by the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance, the others being Monkeyland and Jukani Wildlife Sanctuaries. This world class bird sanctuary opened its doors to the public in December 2005 and today has over 3 500 previously caged birds living in the sanctuary, representing approximately 220 different species. The sanctuary is the worlds’ largest single span aviary with a unique 2 hectare dome covering a gorge of indigenous forest.

Visitors entering the dome have a literal experience of paradise with many free-flight African birds, miniature monkeys, leopard tortoises and a mysterious ruin which includes a walk-behind waterfall and canopy bridge up in the clouds. The experience is truly unique and shows that bird watching doesn’t have to be boring or only for nature conservationists! It is recommended that visitors set aside about 4 hours when visiting the Sanctuary, just to make sure you don’t miss out on anything!

The free-flight bird sanctuary also affords bird owners the opportunity to apply to release their pet birds into the sanctuary, after undergoing rehabilitation.
