The Best Nature Has To Offer
Suiderstrand is a tiny settlement, forming part of the Cape Agulhas District, of approximately only 14 square kilometres and home to only a dozen or so residents.
The name in Afrikaans means “southern beach” and the small coastal village lies surrounded by pristine beaches and the Agulhas National Park. A place with an abundance of natural beauty that continues to flourish with the protected area of the Park. Referred to as the Agulhas Plain, Suiderstrand and the National Park form an important part of the Cape Floral Kingdom and is a safe environment for the unique and rare Laterite Fynbos.
The region is a birders' paradise as it is home to a variety of different bird species that are often never ticked off in their birding books. Numbers of rare coastal birds, such as the African Black Oyster Catcher, have been after many years of near extinction, now been allowed to increase in numbers and have been removed from the critically threatened Red Data List.
Suiderstrand is a unique town at the end of the road for vehicles. The coastline is no doubt one of the most beautiful in the country – pristine, untouched beaches, rockpools, a marine lagoon, pebbly shores, a historic beach home and archaeological fish traps and shipwrecks are all visual treats that await the coastline explorer.
So, if you have never been past the monument at Cape Agulhas, then do yourself a favour and carry on driving down the road until you reach Suiderstrand. Accommodation includes some backpacking in the town as well Guesthouses, B&B’s and self-catering units in the neighbouring towns of Struisbaai and L’Agulhas.
