Stilfontein, North West
Stilfontein is located midway between Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom at the heart of three of the largest gold mines in South Africa – the Hartbeesfontein, Buffelsfontein and Zandpan Mines.
This small mining town forms part of what is known as the KOSH area, Klerksdorp, Orkney, Stilfontein and Hartbeesfontein. Its’ name directly translates to “still fountain” and is only just over an hours’ drive from Johannesburg. A visit to Stilfontein is an ideal way to find out more about the gold mining of the country – both the Stilfontein and Hartbeesfontein mines offer tours and an opportunity to see how gold if poured.
Stilfontein is one of the towns which is visited along the tourist route, the N12 Treasure Route, which includes all the mining “dorps” along he N12 and N14. The route is said to be the best way to “unearth the character of South Africa”!
Stilfontein is known for its small-town hospitality and its location allows visitors to enjoy the activities and attraction from its neighbouring towns. Accommodation options include some Guest houses and self-catering units.

Climate
Stilfontein receives approximately 609 mm of rain annually with most rainfall occurring during the Summer months.
Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 14˚C and 28˚C.
Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 0˚C and 21˚C.
Transport
There are daily domestic and international flights into Johannesburg’s, O R Tambo International Airport approximately 182 Km away via the N12 and into Lanseria Airport, approximately 168 km away via the N12. Car rental companies are available for easy access around the area.
History
Stilfontein was established in 1949 as a residential centre for the mines in the area. The development of gold mines was made possible by the perseverance of Jack Scott who discovered and developed the outcropping gold reef.
