In a quiet area, just off the historic Dorp Street and in the heart of Stellenbosch you will find an art gallery with one of the finest collections of South African Art, the Rupert Museum. Set among picturesque vineyards the Cape Dutch farm-style building compliments the architectural and cultural history of Stellenbosch.

The Museum opened in February 2005 to showcase the private collection established by the late billionaire businessman, Anton Rupert and his wife Huberta. Today the Gallery houses over 350 pieces and although there are some international works of art, the majority of the collection focuses on South African art from 1940 to 1970.

The predominant mediums displayed are paintings, sculptures and tapestries and the collection showcases artists such as Lippy Lipshitz, Anton van Wouw, JH Pierneef, Coert Steynberg, Moses Kotler, Irma Stern, Maggie Laubser, Alexis Preller, Walter Battiss and many more.

Regarded as South Africa’s premier collection of South African Art, Ian Hunter an Independent Art Consultant, in July 2014 estimated the value of the collection at R300-million making the collection one of the most substantial repositories of South African Art. All art is kept in carefully controlled climate conditions to ensure the reservation of the works.

This is a must go to Gallery to see the finest collections of Art , approximately 2000 m² of paintings dating back to first works and some still in their original frames – well worth the visit!
