A Three Day Experience of Neighbourliness

The Makhelwane Festival is a fun street festival, hosted by LoCrate Market, which invites food lovers to share in the traditions of the Soweto African culture.

O Makhelwane is a Zulu term that refers to a person’s neighbour, but in African culture the term has a much deeper meaning, it refers to a Community. The locals of Soweto open their streets, gardens and houses to the public and transform their homes into eateries where food traders will set up food stalls and pop up restaurants for the public to enjoy some tasty meals.

The weekend promises 72 hours of fun, apart from the many eateries, the street as a whole will be turned into a commercial hub with houses and yards also setting up fashion boutiques and art galleries. Locals will also offer cookery classes and live music from local DJ’s. Alpha Craft will host the kick-off party at Lebo’s Backpackers on the Friday evening during the Night Market and Lebo’s Backpackers offers camping for patrons who would like to have a real township experience!

Two local Chefs will face-off in the Street Dining competition, preparing a two-course meal for 50 judges – a VIP tickets gets you in as a judge. Morara Wine, Soweto’s first boutique wine and spirits shop, will be exhibiting their favourite wines to enjoy during this one of a kind Soweto festival.
