Platinum City
Rustenburg is situated at the foot of the majestic Magaliesberg Mountains, approximately 59 km Pretoria and 133 km from Johannesburg. It is a pretty city, and one of the fastest growing in the country, with Jacaranda tree-lined streets which are the hub of a thriving agricultural and mining industry.
Rustenburg is also known as the Platinum City, two of the largest platinum mines lie just outside the city, and as the Home of Paul Kruger, Boekenhoutfontein farm, north-west of Rustenburg, was the home of President Paul Kruger. Of its original 500 hectares, 32 are maintained as a museum.
Despite the name meaning “town of rest” Rustenburg has plenty to offer for Gauteng folk looking for a weekend getaway - its surrounds will take you into a beautiful place filled with history and tourist attractions. Rustenburg has a reputation as being restful, and not just because its name means “resting town”, but more likely from the scenic Magaliesberg mountain range and perhaps the element of sluggishness that can be felt even within the city limits.
The area offers access to game parks, nature reserves and the popular Sun City Resort. The Rustenburg Ramble is another wonderful tourist attraction - a gentle meander that takes in craft galleries, farm stalls and places to eat
Rustenburg offer a variety of accommodation options which includes B&B’s, Guesthouses, Hotels, Lodges, self-catering units as well as caravan parks and camping sites.

The first Voortrekker farmers settled in the area in 1841, before this time the area has a rich history of tribal fighting and land disputes.
The town was established in 1851 as an Administrative Centre for the Afrikaner farming community. It was named Rustenburg, literally meaning “resting town” because they had relatively friendly relations with their Bafokeng allies and believed they could rest ("rusten" in Dutch) in this settlement.
