Totius House Museum in Potchefstroom, North West

The Totius House Museum is situated in the town of Potchefstroom in the North West Province, South Africa.

The Museum is a house museum which forms part of the Dutch Reformed Church complex and was once the home of JD du Toit, who used the nom de plume or pen name Totius. Totius was a poet and theologian and was most famous for his translation of the Bible into Afrikaans. He also published nine volumes of poetry.

The house is a typical example of a home built in the Edwardian period. It was completed in 1905, when it was first occupied by Professor Cachet, until Professor du Toit preceded him as Principle at the Theologian School of the Dutch Reformed Church in 1911. Totius, was an academic, poet and leader in his time and today is arguably the most well-known resident of Potchefstroom. The entire contents of the house museum originated from his family and include paintings from Pierneef, a close friend of the family.

The President Pretorius Museum and Totius House Museum are managed by the Potchefstroom Museum which are all in close proximity to each other and are all well worth a visit.

Climate

Potchefstroom experiences its rainfall in the mid-summer months, with December and January seeing the highest levels.

Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 15˚C and 29˚C.

Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 2˚C and 18˚C.

Transport

Road trips from Johannesburg to Potchefstroom will take approximately one and a half hours (123 km) via the N12.
