Découvrir l'Afrique du Sud
Sors ta tête du sable

The Gamkaberg Nature Reserve, situated just 33 km from Oudtshoorn, offers several hiking trails to overnight and day visitors. Visitors will experience the peace and tranquility of the reserve as well as some magnificent natural viewpoints.

One such viewpoint is at the overhang and the “To Overhang and Back” hiking trail is highly recommended to those who have the time and the fitness level! The trail is 14.4 km long and covers two of the other day trail, the Pied Barbet and Mousebird Trails, as well as part of the longer 2 day trail, the Tierkloof. The hike should take about 6 hours and hikers need to be prepared for fairly rough terrain.

The first part of the trail will take hikers through the Sweet Thorn thicket along the valley bottom and then continues to a higher level offering stunning views over the Sweet Thorn treetops. The real wilderness terrain begins after this where the trail takes on part of the Tierkloof Ravine and can be considered moderately strenuous. It is well worth the effort as the viewpoint from the sandstone cliffs are nothing less than spectacular!

The trail is great for observing the many bush birds found in the Reserve, a bird list will be provided in the information brochure. The most common and interesting plant species are also demarcated all along the trail. The overhang is the perfect spot to relax and have a picnic before heading back to the start at the Info Centre.

Points to remember – do not hike alone, wear comfortable shoes and do not forget your sunscreen, hat, sufficient water!
