Katberg is a small town about two and a half hours drive inland from East London and just 30 km from one of South Africa’s most scenic towns, Hogsback.
Katberg may be a little off the beaten track, but this is exactly what makes this little town so appealing. It is the perfect getaway for those who are in search of fresh mountain air, breathtaking countryside beauty and simply enjoying unspoilt nature.
Here one will find some of the most untouched beauty that anyone could find anywhere on the continent! Hiking in the Katberg forest is very popular with several day walks from one to four hours around the forest station and Katberg Hotel. Fishing is also a popular activity in the Thrift Dam which is well stocked with rainbow trout.
Katberg is limited in terms of shopping, hence most will travel to Hogsback to do their daily shopping - Hogsback comes with many of its own attractions too! Katberg “eating out” means a visit to the Hotel restaurant or, you guessed it, a quick visit to neighbouring Hogsbak.
Accommodation in Katberg includes Lodges, country Guest Houses and a Hotel.

History
A lot of the recorded history of this particular area revolves around the development and conception of colonial towns around the region. The Eastern Cape is home to some of the largest concentration of forts throughout the whole of Africa - small wonder that the Eastern Cape has more forts than any other place in Africa - because it was here that the British fought longest.
There is a route which includes locations near Katberg, where historians or anyone interested in learning about the past, can go and visit these old forts and areas and discover a little bit more about this fascinating part of South Africa.
