St Blaize Hiking Trail in Mossel Bay, Western Cape
The St Blaize Hiking Trail is situated in Mossel Bay in the Western Cape, South Africa.
The Trail is a 13.5 km hike that begins at either the St Blaze Caves below the Lighthouse or Dana Bay. Hikers can walk in either direction and arrange transport from their end point or choose to do the mega hike and return on foot to their starting point along the same trail. One way will take hikers approximately 4 to 5 hours at a moderate pace. Parking is available at either starting point and the trail is marked with a sign of the Oystercatcher, their beaks pointing hikers in the right direction.
The hike is very popular because of its incredibly beautiful scenery from interesting caves and rock formations, pretty fynbos, craggy coastline and sweeping ocean views. Along the way there are a few rock pools perfect for a cooling swim as well as a small sandy beach. With good weather it is possible to see whales and dolphins and possible even sharks in the waters below. The path offers spectaculars views and the peak whale watching season is between June and October.
The trail is a moderately difficult walk, requiring a reasonable degree of fitness. It is not recommended that you hike alone as escape routes are far from town and main roads. Maps of the trail can be collected from the Mossel Bay Tourism office or at the Caves – remember your water, hat and sunscreen!
