Another Small Mining Town
Mooinooi lies in the North West Province, approximately halfway between Brits or Hartbeespoort and Rustenburg.
Mooinooi is a small mining town just west of Magalisburg, it rests in a valley that used to grow citrus fruit. The town makes for a perfect break for city dwellers from Johannesburg and Pretoria and offers a variety of outdoor activities in the area surrounding the town. In particular, the activities include hiking trails, 4 X 4 trails, birding and game viewing. Many of these opportunities are on private farms and visitors may need permission to use some of the trails.
Nearby Hartbeespoort, or Harties as the locals call it, is a wonderful spot to enjoy craft markets, restaurants, animal parks and of course water sports and if you need to get a little shopping done, Brits has a Shopping Mall that will have almost anything you need.
In addition to these attractions, and less than an hour away, is the popular Sun City and Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
Mooinooi and the surrounding areas offer a variety of accommodation which includes B&B’s, Guesthouses, Lodges and self-catering cottages.

History
During its boom years Mooinooi was a thriving mining town, but unfortunately the global financial crisis led to a recession and it has become a small, almost dying town. Unfortunately, some former miners lost their jobs and a few local services went out of business.
Lonmin Platinum Mine is now the only major game in town and the town owes its existence to the mining taking place in the area.
