Montagu Museum (Old Mission Church) in Bergsig, Montagu, Western Cape

The Montagu Museum was originally started in this old neo-gothic Mission Church, built in 1907, which today still houses the administrative offices, as well as the archive which houses all documents, photographs and Africana relating to the history of Montagu and is becoming an increasingly important research centre. The original exhibit from 1975, comprising of a collection of pulpit bibles, church arti-facts and old wedding dresses are still on show for guests to see.  The TO Honiball collection of cartoons and books is an important acquisition as is the Brink Brothers exhibition.

1981 Flood

The devastation caused by the flood of 25 January 1981, which was a major catastrophe for the town, has been fully documented by the museum.

Traditional remedies

Another permanent exhibition is the Indigenous Medicinal Plant research project displayed in one wing. The museum has been researching traditional remedies since 1982 and these are for sale at the museum or can be ordered by post.
