Montagu Nature Garden in Montagu, Western Cape

Montagu Nature Garden being situated in the most southerly part of the succulent Karoo biome, has the unique distinction of possessing flora from three regions of the Western Cape:

Succulent Karoo
Fynbos
Renoster Veld

There are numerous species of succulents, fynbos, geophytes and a diversity of flowering shrubs and trees that occur here. The garden is especially known for the excellent variety of Vygies (mesembryathemums), which sets the garden ablaze with colour during spring.

Although you can visit the reserve at any time, the best would probably be in spring when the excellent variety of Vygies (mesembryathemums) are blooming and covering the reserve in a blaze of colours. Admission fees and donations for maintenance of the Garden can be deposited at the unmanned entrance kiosk.

The facilities of the Montagu Nature Garden are available for a variety of events and occasions such as musical performances, weddings and birthday parties.

Mission

To conserve and develop an indigenous nature reserve containing plant species of the Klein Karoo and adjacent areas, thereby providing opportunities for environmental education and recreation.

Bessiekop Walking Trail

The Bessiekop Walking Trail is a 1,7km fairly easy circular walking trail with benches at strategic intervals that takes visitors to the top of Bessiekop for a magnificent panoramic view of the town and the surrounding Cape Folded Mountains. Bloupunt, one of the highest peaks in the area can be seen in the distance. One is sure to catch sight of a geometric tortoise, a dassie midden or some colourful sunbirds. At the end of the walk there is a dam with a stream, some benches and lush lawns which provide a welcome rest.

Tea Garden

Tea and eats are served every Tuesday morning, for a nominal fee, from 10am until 11.30am during April until the end of October. Parking for the elderly is available in the garden on these days, or by arrangement.

History

The Montagu Nature Garden was established in 1954. This was also the year in which the village of Montagu celebrated its centenary. In 1961 the garden was proclaimed a Nature Reserve and placed in the care of the Montagu Municipality. Currently the Montagu Nature Garden Association 'leases' the Nature Garden on a long-term basis. The association is also a member of the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA)

Their mission is to preserve and develop an indigenous wild flower garden with plant species representative of those in the Klein Karoo and marginal Fynbos biogeoghraphical zone.
