Middelburg Cultural & Historical Museum in Middelburg (EC), Eastern Cape

The Middelburg Cultural and Historical Museum, in the town of Middelburg, is a popular attraction for visitors to the area. It displays the history of Middelburg as well as its surrounding areas. It is located in an old Victorian building, partially built out of stone. The main building was completed and erected in 1906. It was originally built as a school for the poor, opening its doors in 1898 and operated as such until 1914.

The Eastern Cape Midlands has an abundance of cultural and heritage sites, these are probably the most underestimated attractions of the area. This is an area that played a significant role in the liberation of South Africa and is the birthplace of great struggle icons such as Chris Hani, after whom the municipal district is named, as well as Walter Sisulu.

The Middelburg Museum was established here in 1985 and exhibits depicting the early Karoo lifestyle and an internationally renowned collection of San artefacts are on display. Collections include memorabilia and other items of interest and historical significance from the Stone Age to present day. The collections also include memorabilia from previous famous residents, both political and cultural such as playwright Athol Fugard and aviation artist Tiro Voster.

The Museum portrays the everyday life of a small community living in the isolation of the Great Karoo. For anyone visiting the area and wanting to understand its history, the Middelburg Cultural and Historical Museum should be their first stop.
