Melkbosstrand Beach in Melkbosstrand, Western Cape

As you head out of Cape Town, past Bloubergstrand, towards the Cape West Coast, one of the first beaches you will find yourself at is Melkbosstrand Beach, commonly referred to as Melkbos Beach. The beach is named after the species of Euphorbiaceae bushes which grow on the dunes and give off a milky latex like substance.

Melkbos Beach is another West Coast beach with Blue Flag status.  Participation in this international programme is voluntary and the status indicates that the beaches have bathing water of the highest standard, are clean, have adequate ablution facilities and parking, are environmentally sound, are safe and secure to visit, and adhere to international safety and tourism standards. This 7 km stretch of powdery white sand offers all this plus stunning sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean with views of Robben Island and Table Mountain.

The beach offers hours of beach strolling and is especially popular with surfers due to its good surfing conditions. Boating enthusiasts will also be happy to know there is a safe slipway which they can make use of and although the beach is a safe swimming spot, with lifeguards in season, swimmers should be beware as the water here can be a little on the chilly side!

Melkbos Beach is within walking distance of a variety of local restaurants and pubs and don’t fret, if you wish to bring along your four-legged friend for a sunrise or sunset walk you may do so, just ensure you bring along their leads!
