Loxton lies along a popular route toward the west coast, the R63, 80 km from Victoria West and just over nine hours from Johannesburg, and six hours from Cape Town.
Loxton is one of those rare Karoo villages that has plenty of trees thanks to far-seeing townsfolk who planted trees along all its streets over one hundred years ago. It is one of the most beautiful towns in the Upper Karoo, its pretty and really peaceful! Spring is full of blossom scents and Summer brings the gardens to life.
The town is full of character, after years of standing empty most buildings are or have been restored and the town, once thought of as a retirement village, is enjoying a revival. Locals are friendly and visitors will frequently be greeted by Donkey carts klip-kloping through town sedately!
Unique stone Corbelled houses that are shaped like beehives are also found around Loxton. These dwellings only occur in a small area of the Karoo roughly between Loxton, Fraserburg, Williston, and Carnarvon. They were built from 1811 onwards by the early trekboers (migratory farmers) and due to the lack of other building materials, consist solely of local stone and have no supporting roof beams.
Loxton offers a peaceful breakaway with incredible architecture and scenic beauty. Purchase delicious local produce and products and spend a night or two before travelling further, it will be worth a short stop over.
The Karoo hospitality is world famous and despite the town being so small, Loxton does have a few self-catering establishments as well as a Guesthouse near Church square.

History
Loxton was originally a farm called Phizantefontein. The farm was bought from AE Loxton by the Dutch Reformed Church in 1899 and so the town of Loxton was founded, and the church built to serve the surrounding farming community. Loxton became a municipality in 1905.
The town suffered a setback in March 1961 when three-quarters of the town was destroyed by a flash-flood causing the dam above the town to burst, but has long since recovered.
