Langebaan is the perfect short or weekend getaway destination near Cape Town and its main attraction is naturally the Langebaan Lagoon. The Lagoon is a large salt water lagoon that is protected by the West Coast National Park, formally known as the Langebaan National Park.

Unlike standard fresh water lagoons, the Langebaan Lagoon has been shaped by the rise and fall of sea levels over time. No river runs through the lagoon which makes it one of only three lagoons world-wide, not fed by fresh water. It is 16 km long and no wider than 3 km at any given point. The water is a beautiful turquoise and is no deeper than 6 metres.

The Langebaan Lagoon and its beautiful landscape attracts numerous waterbirds and is considered one of South Africa’s Important Bird Areas (IBA) as well as holds Ramsar wetland status. Rare migrant bird species such as Godwits, Whimbrels and Curlews are present most of the time, but there is always a possibility of seeing rarer species. The Lagoon also attracts Flamingoes and White Pelican which frequent the deeper water.

It’s not just birders who frequent the lagoon area, water sport enthusiasts, hikers, nature lovers and sun worshippers often hire out self-catering beach cottages to spend just a few day relaxing out at the Lagoon.
