In January 1981 Laingsburg, a small town in the Cape Karoo, experienced what continues to be the most dramatic natural disaster ever to have taken place in South Africa, the Laingsburg Flood. The Laingsburg Flood Museum was erected in remembrance of those who lost their lives and for those who helped during this tragedy.

The Museum is dedicated to capturing the history of the flood and conveying the mammoth effect of this disaster on the town and its people. Francis van Wyk has been responsible for the museum project and collecting artifacts for the project since its inception.  She has since received a ministerial special award for her hard work and dedication to the project.

The Flood Museum Complex is also home to the tourism information office and includes the interesting Wolfaardt Collection on the Great Trek, the Anglo-Boer War and the indigenous Khoi San folk that once occupied the region. These exhibits tell fascinating stories about the history and heritage of South Africa.

The Complex offers a quaint curio shop with plenty little keepsakes to take home. If you find yourself in the area, this little museum is definitely worth a visit.
