Joubets Pass is a steep, high altitude, the third highest Pass in the country, gravel road Pass that links Lady Grey with Barkly East in the Eastern Cape. It is also one of the renowned Eight Passes of the Eastern Cape.

Distance 10.7 km
Gradient average 1:19
Gradient maximum 1:6
Summit 2234 m
Surface Gravel / Dirt Track

The road has all the elements of steep gradients, rough surfaces, grandiose views, high altitudes, extreme weather and careful driving to make it onto the Top 20 list of South African gravel road passes. Jouberts Pass lies close to the Lesotho border in the Witteberg Mountains so will be closed anytime when the road is not clear of snow. Under more fair weather the Pass is suitable for all vehicles.

It is recommended to drive the Pass from the west, from Lady Grey, for scenic purposes only and it is also highly recommended to completing the circuit, eventually arriving back at the R58 after quite a long but fabulous gravel road loop.

As far as the roads go, Jouberts Pass is in good condition and there are wonderful views of Lady Grey and for miles around – views from the summit are not much to write home about! but at the summit there is a stone monument inscribed with the name of a number of Joubert family members plus two others.

Jouberts Pass was built in 1914 by seven farmers as a means of reaching their farms over the mountains. Five of the farmers had the surname Joubert so hence the name of the Pass. At the summit there is a stone monument inscribed with the name of a number of Joubert family members plus two others.
