Remkloof Pass lies along the N2, between Jeffreys Bay and Port Elizabeth. The road is well maintained and in good condition, suitable for any vehicle. The road also offers multiple lanes and adequate safety shoulders however, it would be wise to remember that the road is very busy.

Remkloof Pass is built along the eastern side of a substantial kloof yet is a fairly easy drive with only three gentle corners. The Pass does offer a substantial climb though, from just 3 metres above seas level at the crossing of the river up to the summit of 209 metres. The summit is also the eastern starting point of the Pass.

Driving from Port Elizabeth the Pass begins approximately 58 km outside of the city along the N2. From the west, the Remkloof Pass begins approximately 32 km outside of Humansdorp. The western starting point is most likely the most attractive feature of the Pass.

At this point, you will see the Gamtoos River lazily passing by as well as the suspension bridge, locally known as "the hanging bridge" which forms an attractive focal point across the salty estuary. The bridge carries a water pipeline and ends abruptly at both ends with tall concrete pylons. About 1.3 km further upstream is the old steel bridge built in 1934 and is still in use today servicing the old main road, the R102.

This is not an ideal spot along the N2 however, taking a short turn onto one of the smaller side roads will allow for a stop an even an opportunity to explore the small village near the mouth - The Gamtoos Mouth Village.
