Island Living
Leisure Isle is not only as pretty as a picture postcard, it is also an everyday reality of an idyllic lifestyle with something for everyone. Whether is it boating, building sandcastles, canoeing, cycling, fishing, kite-boarding, sailing, walking or windsurfing, there is something for the young, the old and everyone in-between. There are also bowling greens and tennis courts for those who like to feel the terra firma beneath their feet.
Constantly changing
Linked by a narrow causeway to the mainland, Leisure Isle is surrounded by the tidal Knysna estuary and ringed by a chain of hills. The scene changes constantly within the sea walls that surrounds the island, with salt marshes and the ebb and flow of the tides.
At one with Nature
There is a sense of being at one with nature with its narrow roads, small lanes, lovely gardens, the water that is never far away, and its exquisite 360 degree views.
Birds and fynbos
Along its shoreline lie sandy beaches, green parks where one can picnic and braai, and regions of safeguarded natural vegetation. The Island and the estuary are dwelling places to a diversity of birds and over 300 species of fynbos.
People-friendly character
Once regarded by its inhabitants as predominantly a pedestrian precinct where children and the elderly could wander safely on foot or on their bicycles, this scene is unfortunately changing, with many heavy-duty vehicles now using the Island's roads, and a growing disregard for the 40 kph speed limit. Hopefully however, with adequate traffic controls, speed humps, careful driving and fostering an awareness in all motorists and cyclists, Leisure Isle will be able to retain its people-friendly character.
