Klerksdorp is a mere 50 km from its neighbour Potchefstroom and less than 200 km from Johannesburg . It is the centre for a large mining and agricultural economy and boasts the second largest grain co-operative in the world.
Despite the fact that the town today thrives on agriculture and mining, it is still surrounded by unique scenery. The Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve is only 13 km out of town and a must for nature lovers. The Johan Neser Dam lies on the Schoonspruit just northwest of the town and also worth a visit if you are looking for the greener attractions that Klerksdorp has to offer.
Klerksdorp is full of history and has many places to visit that may not always be thought of as tourists spots, but are of interest to visitors looking for the history of the town. These history stops include the Railway Station and Flag Room or the original distillery. The “ou dorp” (old town) hiking trail takes you through the old part of town and its streets that today are lined with historic buildings and sites which includes Jack Scott’s House, an original tin house imported all the way from Britain.

History
Like so many other towns in the area, it was the discovery of gold that ensured the rise of this town in 1886. Thousands of gold prospectors descended on the quiet rural area of Klerksdorp and the town developed quickly.
The first small community that settled on the banks of the Schoonspruit was in 1837 and this community’s first magistrate was Jacob de C’lerq. It was his name that was chosen for this town, founded by Voortrekkers and built by gold mining.
