Sors ta tête du sable

The Hole in the Wall lies in the centre of the 300 km stretch of Wild Coast between East London and Port Edward, in a tiny holiday village of the same name. It is considered one of the most impressive landmarks, second only to Table Mountain, though a fraction of the size, along the entire South African coastline!

The Hole in the Wall, near Coffee Bay, is a unique structure. It is a huge detached cliff that has, developed over time, a giant opening carved through its centre by the waves. During certain seasons and water conditions (high tide) the waves clap in such a fashion that the concussion can be heard throughout the valley. The local Xhosa call this place "izi Khaleni", which means "place of thunder".

Legend of the Hole in the Wall

Xhosa mythology tells a far more romantic tale of the sea people, semi deities who look like humans but have supple wrists and ankles and flipperlike hands and feet. A beautiful girl living on the Wild Coast, in a village near a lagoon, cut off from the sea by a mighty cliff, was seen by one of the sea people who became overwhelmed by her beauty and tried to woo her.

While dealing with the wrath of her father, the sea people enlisted the help of a huge fish who battered its way headfirst through the wall of rock. Through this hole spilled the sea people who swept the young Xhosa maiden away.

Getting There

The roads in the area require a 4x4 vehicle, the Ocean View Hotel in Coffee Bay offers tours in their own vehicle if you prefer, or the well-known 10 km, Coffee Bay to Hole in the Wall Hike is a popular way to visit the landmark.

Many locals will offer to take you on the guided tour and can charge anything from R50 upwards for their tour. The locals are friendly however, it is suggested to be very aware when using a non-reputable guide if you do choose to take the guided tour!

Remember your hat, sunscreen, drinking water and your swimming costume.
