Like Finding Neverland
Kaapschehoop, a quaint little village, is set atop a mountain pass above Nelspruit in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa.
Once described as “finding Neverland”, Kaapschehoop comes into view as you drive up from the N4, appearing as if out of the mists of time. It is a small town, easily missed if you are not looking for it, but making a stop here is definitely worth your while!
This ghost like town is known for its beautiful scenery, popular hiking trails, blue swallows and especially its wild horses! Perfectly located for a day trip to appreciate its natural splendour and the scenic drive alone from Nelspruit to Kaapschehoop is reason enough to visit the small town.
Kaapschehoop has the only wild horse herds in the country. They roam free and every now and then tourists are fortunate enough to see them when they visit the town. There are also a number of tours available which give visitors the opportunity to see the natural beauty of Kaapschehoop on horseback.
Visitors can also view the old government buildings which still exist and unleash their inner artist and attend various painting workshops or visit crafters in their studios – the misty mountains here have long been attracting artists and the little village is known for its creativity.
Kaapschehoop offers a number of popular spots to visit for a great meal or a sweet treat and accommodation in the area includes some charming guest houses, B&B’s and self-catering units!

History
In 1882 Bernard Chomse claimed to have found gold in the bed of a stream on a high, narrow plateau which projects like a finger between the valleys of the Elands and the Little Crocodile rivers, with the tip of the finger ending in the Crocodile River Valley.
It was this discovery of gold in the streams around Kaapschehoop, originally named Duiwel’s Kantoor by passing hunters because of its then sinister atmosphere, is what led to the establishment of this town in 1882.
However, the earlier better paying discoveries of gold at both Pilgrim's Rest in 1873 and Barberton in 1881, followed by the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886 (later to become the town of Johannesburg), coupled with the meager returns obtained at Kaapschehoop led to the town going into decline.
