The Riemland Route is a 200 km, self-drive route along the R57 which traverses from the north across the north eastern section of the Free State.

The route starts in the Vaal Triangle in the town of Sasolburg and passes through the farming town of Heilbron, Petrus Steyn, Lindley, Arlington, Senekal and Rosendal. From this route you can continue on to Bloemfontein or Ficksburg and drive the Maloti Route or head straight into Lesotho via Ficksburg or Fouriesburg.

The Riemland area is largely an area of wide flat horizons where you will see vast fields of maize and sunflowers as well as cattle, sheep and horses. The Riemland is also well known for the large number of game and predators that roamed the plains during the 1800’s. The name came from the Afrikaans word “Riem” which means “leather thong” - great hunters where attracted to the game and large quantities of the skins were used to make leather thongs and other leather products.

The Riemland Route is host to some very interesting heritage hotspots. The Free State has a rich history and heritage ranging from the habitation of the San Bushman, Leghoya, Basotho and other tribes to the 1820 Settlers (Voortrekkers) and their wars with the tribes and the Anglo Boer War.

Most of the towns en route have war memorials, monuments and small museums to visit, as well as hiking trails to explore San Rock Art. The Afrikaans culture is evident in the iconic Victorian buildings and beautiful churches. All this, plus traditional values and slow pace of life, has almost turned the province into a living museum and the Riemland Route explores every nook and cranny of this fascinating part of the country.
