Sodwana Bay is situated in a narrow strip of forested sand dunes on the east coast of South Africa between Lake Sibhayi in the north and St Lucia in the south.
It’s 50 km of coral reefs contain over 1200 species of fish as well as a variety of underwater seascapes, marine fauna and flora, including 95 species of hard and soft coral, sponges and other invertebrates.
Frequently by divers and fisherman, Sodwana Bay is rated as one of the top ten dive destinations in the world and is a favoured and popular sport fishing destination.
Coelacanth re-discovered
In 2002 the Coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae, was re-discovered in the deep Jesser Canyon offshore from Sodwana Bay but because of the depth of their habitat it is unknown how many exist.
