The Republic of Hout Bay
Hout Bay, or “Republic of Hout Bay” as it is affectionately referred to by its residents, lies just 20 minutes from the centre of Cape Town. It has a unique and timeless beauty that makes it attractive to one and all and is surrounded by an amphitheatre of mountains that seem to majestically guard over its calm indigo bay.
Hout Bay offers an exceptional holiday experience with an emphasis on nature, sun, sea and sand! It is central to all Cape Town attractions however this popular tourist spot provides more than enough attractions of its own. The surrounding mountains offer hiking and cycling trails and with the sea on your doorstep a full menu of water sports from fishing and kayaking to snorkelling and champagne boat cruises are available all year round!
All roads leading into Hout Bay are incredibly scenic drives. Chapman’s Peak remains one of the most beautiful routes and the drive over Constantia Nek provides outstanding views of False Bay.
Hout Bay’s prime attraction is the long stretch of beach popular among tourists and locals who gather here over the weekends to enjoy local fish 'n chips and to catch a glimpse of the resident Cape seals that make the harbour their home.
Hout Bay features a range of excellent accommodation, from B&Bs and guest houses, to hotels and self-catering establishments.

History
The town derives its name from the Afrikaans word ‘Houtbaai’ meaning ‘Wood Bay’, so named by the Dutch Settlers back in 1653, while they explored the bay behind Table Mountain. Its beautiful heavily wooded valley became the main source of timber for the building and repairs of ships and also for buildings such as the Castle of Good Hope.
The fishing village of Hout Bay was probably established in about 1867 when a German immigrant, Jacob Trautmann, began to farm and fish in the area.
Formerly a fishing village, Hout Bay has managed to retain its unique combination of fishing harbour and country atmosphere, despite all the development.
