Sors ta tête du sable

The Hilton Railway Station Museum, formally the Natal Railway Museum in Pietermaritzburg, is now located in Hilton at the old Railway Station. The Museum lies next to what used to be the main railway line between Durban and Johannesburg.

In 2011 the Hilton Steam Heritage Association was formed and they opened the Hilton Station Railway Museum with an Open Day that included firing up the North British Tank engine (dating from 1950) and the 1937 Cowan Sheldon Steam Crane. The steam crane was thought to be the only operational steam crane in the country at the time.

This railway line, alongside the Museum, is over 125 years old and has not been used for over a decade. The museum was hoping to change all that with plans to run trips from the station through the beautiful Natal Midlands countryside to Howick Falls, but unfortunately train rides will not be possible as a permit for these still has be obtained from Transnet.

The Museum displays various railway memorabilia and antiques such as silverware from the Blue Train and train tokens that were used when this mode of transport first became popular. The Hilton Steam Heritage Association also hosts family events at the Museum to bring people together to celebrate the community and the heritage which is shared – contact the Association to enquire about their next weekend or holiday function.
