Best View in Town

A unique feature that rises out of the otherwise flat plain on which Hermanus is built, is Hoy’s Koppie. Believed to have been formed about 450 million years ago, this landmark has the best view in town!

For visitors, this is a must do. There is ample parking at the foot of the Koppie and the walk is an easy stroll, although there are quite a lot of steps, on a clearly marked route and wooden walkway. The isolated hill rises about 75 metres above sea level and the walk is about 15 to 20 minutes to reach the top where you can view the whole town and the bay area.

In the mid-19th century the early inhabitants of Hermanuspietersfontein called it “Klip Kop”, but today everyone knows it as Hoy’s Koppie after it was renamed after Sir William Hoy. He was one of the most charismatic figures in Hermanus history, a Scottish-born head of the Cape and South African Railways in the 1920s who fell in love with Hermanus and visited the village repeatedly for the fishing and the relaxed and restful lifestyle. One of his greatest pleasures was to climb “Klip Kop” with his gillie to watch the sunset and plan the next days fishing. On his death in 1930, he was buried at the highest point on the koppie and in 1935, Lady Gertrude was buried alongside her husband.

Remember your hat, sunscreen and water, the full experience should take about and hour. A sunset visit is also highly recommended!
