Bosman Country
Marico lies halfway between Zeerust and Swartruggens in the North-West province.
The name, meaning “Big Marico” has nothing to do with the size of the town, which is very small, but was so named after the Marico River.
The town is known for its beautiful bushveld surroundings and its special kind of hospitality. It is the ideal location to escape the busy city life. Groot Marino is however, “Bosman Country”, most famous for being the town that inspired the great South African Author, Herman Charles Bosman’s best-known short stories, the Oom Schalk Lourens series – here intimate stories are shared warmly, in true Oom Schalk Lourens style! Many of his fans come to visit the HC Bosman Living Museum - called this because it looks exactly like the local school at which Bosman taught in 1926.
Groot Marico is small, blink and you could miss it, but it has much to offer. The town is full of old historical buildings and is also the land of mampoer, a breathtaking strong spirit distilled from fruit. Visit the Environmental Centre to book tours of both the town and mampoer farms. For the physically active there are a number of hiking trails, water sports on the Dam or diving at the Eye of Marico.
Accommodation options in the area range from guesthouses and guest farms to bona fide farming accommodation.
